These ropes, made from hemp instead of nylon, are handstitched with waxed linen thread and feature techniques from the Ottoman era. Hemp, being an organic material, is less durable than nylon, so it is no longer preferred. But it%u2019s heartening to see that this tradition is being preserved and passed on. Thanks to the nearly forgotten craft of saddle-making, Murat G%u00fcn%u00fc came up with this idea. He emphasizes the importance of including saddle-making in the Ministry of Education%u2019s vocational programs. Today, saddlers receive certificates in fields like bag-making and leatherworking, even though they are not part of these professions. He would like us to share this message: %u201cSaddle-making must be added to the curriculum. I am ready to be one of the first instructors in this field. My dream is to see this application on all marine vessels in T%u00fcrkiye. Naturally, we will need hundreds of saddlers to make this happen. I truly believe that we will see these days.%u201dThis application, for which a patent has been filed, seems poised to become widely recognized and preferred not just in T%u00fcrkiye but around the world in the coming years. The fact that this technique was developed by a Turkish craftsman, inspired by history, is a source of pride. All that%u2019s left for us to do is to send off this project to the seas with a saying fit for sailors: May the leather-covered ropes have a clear bow, steady helm, and favorable winds!Ya%u015fam / Life
