This versatility led him to merge the maritime and leathercraft industries, creating an entirely new sector. Are you ready to read about the journey of a craftsman who brought the ancient %u2018wisdom%u2019 of leather covering to modern mooring ropes?Craft Learned from His FatherTo begin the story, we must first talk about how Murat G%u00fcn%u00fc learned the craft of saddle-making from his father and mastered it. This early education played a significant role in his ability to merge different disciplines later in life. Saddle-making is a craft typically associated with creating products like saddles, bridles, and reins for horses. At the age of seven, Murat started working with leather, learning to shape it and speak its language. While striving to keep this ancient craft alive, he didn%u2019t neglect his education and went on to study sociology at university. One day, while practicing his craft, the question arose: %u201cCan I extend the lifespan of mooring ropes, which usually break after about three years, by applying leather covering?%u201d This question led him into years of research and hard work. When I asked him what %u201cleather covering%u201d meant, he explained: %u201cThe word %u2018covering%u2019 refers to coating. All marine vessels must be moored to docks using ropes. The process of applying leather to the spliced ends of these mooring ropes is called leather covering.%u201dI learned that today, materials like fire hoses and textiles are commonly used, but they only last about 3-4 years. However, with leather covering, this duration can be extended to a minimum of 10 years and up to a maximum of 20 years.Following in the Footsteps of %u00c7aka Bey, Piri Reis, and Oru%u00e7 Reis%u2026Historically, great Turkish %u2013 Otto man sailors like %u00c7aka Bey, Piri Reis, and Oru%u00e7 Reis used this technique.
